Heavy Song of the Week is a Heavy Consequence feature that breaks down the best metal and hard rock tracks you need to hear every Friday. This week, the title track goes to Hot Water Music for their latest single “After the Impossible.”
Post-hardcore veterans Hot Water Music are clearly putting their heart and soul into the work that is their new album. votes. Loaded with guests, the singles we've heard so far possess great sincerity, as well as an awareness of the band's legacy and its beloved discography. There is an air of celebration, without a doubt.
“After the Impossible” is the latest single and features a special appearance by Dallas Green of City and Color. While the song is on the more balladish side of the Hot Water Music songbook, the band can't help but inject power into the performance and singing, harnessing a passionate urgency that makes the song soar.
Hot Water Music also went all out with the music video. Instead of literally conceptualizing the love song lyrics, the clip is a full-on '80s sci-fi/fantasy treatment in the vein of The Goonies and The endless story. Watch the James Poitier-directed video below.
Honorable mentions:
Bleeding – “Our brand is chaos”
“Fuck us and find out!”
How's that for an opening chorus? The latest in a series of singles from metalcore veterans, Bleeding Through has some European metal trappings. Prominent keyboards and progressive guitar flourishes are always at home in this weekly roundup and fit well into the context of the band's overall toughness.
Kittie – “Vultures”
Kittie's new songs have been full of great riffs and “Vultures” is no exception. This is lean-mean thrash with that 90s rhythm a la Pantera and Sepultura. A nice way to announce the Canadian bands first new album in 13 years, appropriately titled Fire.
You – “Uninvited Guest”
Metal crusted with completely dirty mud from underground vets. You. Again, the band moves at a fast, breakneck pace, giving off major Eyehategod vibes (must be in the water in NOLA). We should also draw attention to perhaps the best YouTube viewer of all time. As one commenter put it: “When you buy a subscription to footage and you're going to get your money's worth.”
