Heavy Song of the Week is a feature from Heavy Consequence that looks at the best metal, punk, and hard rock songs you should be listening to every Friday. This week, the top spot goes to Human Impact for their riff-filled new single, “Corrupted.”
Noise rock supergroup Human Impact (featuring members of Unsane, Cop Shoot Cop, and Daughters) are releasing their sophomore effort, It became darkon October 4th. This week they released the single “Corrupted,” and we can't get over the song's seismic central riff.
Seriously, this is a stinging riff, and it's nothing fancy. Just some down-up-down action and a handful of notes. But if we're going to judge a riff by its memorability and hook-ability, this one is top-notch, and will stick in your head. The way the bass is mixed with just enough highs to enhance Chris Spencer's guitar gives it that very Unsane-esque edge. We also love what Jim Coleman brings to the band, as his ominous aural textures color a dark backdrop against Spencer's desperate guitars and screams.
Honorable mentions:
Maul – “Spontaneous Stigmata”
“Spontaneous Stigmata” is an expertly paced death metal song. It starts with a mid-tempo gallop, then the Fargo-based band leads the arrangement through a sped-up version of the same riff before collapsing into a Hooded Menace-style death-doom breakdown that hits with maximum impact (kudos to vocalist Garrett Alvarado for some incredible screams during this section).
Touché Amoré – “Hal Ashby”
Touché Amoré's new song (and music video) pays homage to 1970s counterculture filmmaker Hal Ashby. His films are known for their tragic and misunderstood characters, themes that frontman Jeremy Bolm explores in the song's lyrics. The chorus could be the plea of one of Ashby's characters in a film script: “Send me away, send me away / I’ll take some time, recalibrate / I’ll try anything, anything / If it will correct my course.” Musically, Touché Amoré has settled into a melodic, slightly melancholic post-hardcore that always seems to add intensity to Bolm's words, which is certainly the case here.
Undeath – “Controversial malignancy”
The tagline for Undeath’s new single should give you a good idea of what to expect from this rising death metal outfit: “In a world where the biggest metal bands play 8-string adult contemporary music, Undeath dares to do the unthinkable: play real death metal for real death metal fans.” We’re getting Cannibal Corpse vibes on Undeath’s latest single, as the band dials up OSDM riffs and soulful drums. The touch of classic thrash in the guitar work goes a long way, breaking up the mosh sections with just a hint of melody — a word that feels weird to even type in relation to a song called “Disputatious Malignancy.”
