Tracy Chapman came out on top Advertising signCountry Songwriters chart (dated June 17) for the first time, thanks to Luke Combs' cover of her hit “Fast Car.”
Combs' release has generated at least $500,000 in worldwide publishing royalties, Advertising sign estimates, with the majority going to Chapman, who owns both a writer's and publisher's stake in the song. Additionally, the success of Combs' version boosted Chapman's original, with weekly consumption of Chapman's version increasing 44% since Combs' version was released, according to Luminate.
“I never expected to be on the country charts, but I'm honored to be there,” Chapman said Advertising sign in a statement. “I'm happy for Luke and his success, and I'm grateful that new fans have found and embraced 'Fast Car.'”
At the 2024 Grammy Awards on February 4, Combs and Chapman took the stage together to perform “Fast Car”. Shortly before the show, Combs addressed Chapman's talent and impact on his life, saying that “Fast Car” was “my favorite song before I even knew what a favorite song was.” He added that he was honored to appear in the same sentence as her performing her single. “Tracy is such an idol and one of the best songwriters any of us will ever come across,” he said. “It's such a cool moment for me — to be associated with her in any way is extremely humbling for me.”
If you need a guide to follow along with “Fast Car”, find the lyrics below:
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we can make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Any place is better
Starting from scratch I had nothing to lose
Maybe we can work something out
I, I, have nothing to prove
You have a fast car
I have a plan to get us out of here
I worked at the convenience store
He managed to save only a little money
You won't have to drive far
Just cross the border and enter the city
You and I can get a job
And finally see what it means to live
You see, my old man has a problem
He lives off the bottle, that's right
He says his body is too old to function
His body is too young to look like his
My mom went away and left him
He wanted more from life than it could give
I said someone has to take care of him
So I dropped out of school and that's what I did
You have a fast car
Is it fast enough for us to fly far?
We have to make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way
So I remember when we were driving, we were driving in your car
Speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
The lights of the city spread out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I felt like I belonged
I felt like I could be somebody, be somebody, be somebody
You have a fast car
We go on a cruise, we have fun
You still don't have a job
And I work in the market as a cashier
I know things will get better
You'll get a job and I'll get promoted
We will leave the shelter
buy a bigger house and live in the suburbs
So I remember when we were driving, we were driving in your car
Speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
The lights of the city spread out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I felt like I belonged
I felt like I could be somebody, be somebody, be somebody
You have a fast car
I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than your kids
I always hoped for better
I thought maybe together you and I would find it
I have no plans, I'm not going anywhere
Get your fast car and keep driving
So I remember when we were driving, we were driving in your car
Speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
The lights of the city spread out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I felt like I belonged
I felt like I could be somebody, be somebody, be somebody
You have a fast car
Is it fast enough to fly far?
You have to make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way
