If you thought surprise drops and visual albums were the height of Beyoncé's powers, think again. By 2022 Renaissance and her buzzy news Cowboy Carter album, Queen Bey has been meticulously rolling out a massive trilogy of releases that are sure to leave an indelible mark on popular music.
Long before “Texas Hold 'Em” made history for many Advertising sign on the charts, Beyoncé began her trilogy with the release of the Grammy-winning 'Break My Soul'. This smash anthem served as the lead single for Renaissancewhich Beyoncé described as the first in a “three-act project” she recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This three-act work was recorded over three years during the pandemic,” she wrote in a message. official webpage. “A time to be still, but also a time when I found myself at my most creative. Creation [Renaissance] it gave me a place to dream and find escape in a scary time for the world. It allowed me to feel free and adventurous at a time when little else was moving.”
A kaleidoscopic mix of country, R&B, opera, '70s rock, hip-hop, Americana, house, blues, gospel and more, Cowboy Carter it has a few entry points that go seamlessly into the Renaissance world. Actually the end of it Cowboy Carter closer “Amen” transitions seamlessly to Renaissance opener “I'm That Girl”; the shimmering synth at the end of “Amen” sounds like a spaceship transporting us to a world of alien superstars.
The connections don't stop there. There are many lyrical easter eggs baked into both albums, further strengthening the relationship between the two albums. In a press release shared shortly after the album's release, Beyoncé revealed that she was “originally going to put Cowboy Carter out first, but with the pandemic, there was too much weight in the world. We wanted to dance. We deserved to dance. But I had to trust God's timing.” Needless to say, Beyoncé's grand vision is coming together right before our eyes.
Here are some links between Cowboy Carter and Renaissance.
-
“Amen” & “I'm That Girl”
In Cowboy Carter closer “Amen” — which intersperses “Ameriican Requiem” — Beyoncé delivers a haunting hymn to America's memory. “Say a prayer for what's been done/ We'll be the ones to atone for the sins of our Fathers,” he sings. “American Requiem/ Their old ideas are buried here/ Amen.”
Here, Beyoncé conjures up a funeral for an America doomed by its twin original sins, laying the groundwork to sing, “Cleanse me of my sins / My un-American life” on Renaissance opener “I'm that girl.” After all, what comes after death? A rebirth — a rebirth, if you will.

“American Requiem” & “My House”
To celebrate his release Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé — her top-grossing concert documentary on her record-breaking Renaissance World tour — Queen Bey dropped a band anchored at home with the aptly titled “My house.” “I grew up in this (House)/ I blew up in this (House)/ I'm too high in this (House)/ Don't give an af–k about my (House)? / Then get the f–k out of my house,” he proclaims in the second half of the song.
Since “My House” is something of a postscript to it Renaissance album, the track finds Beyoncé celebrating and championing the musical and metaphorical home she passed for the Billboard 200-topping LP. So it's no surprise that he specifically sings about a “home” he didn't have access to Cowboy Carter opener “American Requiem”. “Goodbye to everything,” he cries. “Beautiful house that we never settled in.” When faced with rejection, Beyoncé took her tools and built her own house.
-
“Spaghettii” & “Pure / Honey”
With the line “cunty, country, petty, petty, petty” in “Spaghettii”, Beyoncé references Kevin Aviance's “Cunty” sample. “Pure / Honey,” in which she screams, “Get your money, money, you crazy, hunter/ Don't be funny with my money, honey.”
-
“Levi's Jeans” & “Church Girl”
On the flirtatious Post Malone-assisted “Levii's Jeans,” the singer-rapper croons, “I need you all night long, you're my Renaissance.” An obvious nod to Renaissance album and its celebration of sweaty, lustful dance-floor grabbing, Posty's lines are also reminiscent of the reckless abandon sung by Beyoncé “Church Girl” when he proclaims, 'You know you've got church in the morning'/ But you're doing God's work, you're in.”
Looks like Posty and Bey responded The question of Luther Vandrossheaven can indeed wait if it means one last night of feeding on what brings you joy.
-
“Flamenco” & “I'm That Girl”
In Cowboy Carter “Flamenco” standout, Beyoncé sings, “Inhale and exhale my breath until the deed is done.” These lines have some additional context “I'm That Girl” where bringing the rhythm—the backbone of her house—is her act. “I'm drawing relief / Bring on that beat, now I can breathe again!” she exclaims.

“Ya Ya” & “Cozy”
Here is another strange connection between Cowboy Carter and Renaissance: both albums feature songs with lines that play with the colors of the flags most often associated with the culture each LP explores — the American and Progress Pride flags, respectively.
“Ya Ya”: “Good USA, s–t/ All red on that white and blue, uh/ History can't be erased, o-o/ Looking for a new America?”
“Hot”: “Black like love too deep/ Dance on the soles of my feet/ Green eyes envy me/ Paint the world pink pussy/ Blue like the soul I crowned/ I drank purple and haute couture dresses/ Golden fangs a shadow that God made/ Blue , black, white and brown/ Paint the town cinnamon red/ Yellow diamonds, limoncello glycerine/ Icy rainbow in the streets/ Renaissance, yachts in Capri!”

“II Hands II Heaven”, “Virgo's Groove” & “Move”
In Cowboy Carter's “II Hands II Heaven,” sings Beyoncé, “Feel like you partied on Venus and woke up on Mars.” During her Renaissance world tour, Beyoncé did the sensual thing “Virgo's Groove” in a shell reminiscent of 'The Birth of Venus'. On tour — as in the album — “Movement,” A combative track worthy of Ares, the Roman god of war, follows 'Virgo's Groove', completing the image he makes on 'II Hands II Heaven'.

“Tyrant”, “Cuff It (Wetter Remix)” & “Alien Superstar”
Of course, two of the most poignant parts of the trilogy share some lines in common. For those who need a refresher, “Cuff It (Wetter Remix)” it's the slower, more sensual version of it of the Renaissance “Shut it up,” the Grammy Award-winning Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hit (No. 6).
“Tyrant”: “Sit it down like a plumber, I'm such a tyrant/ Every time I ride it, every time I ride it”
“Cuff It (Weather)”: “Suppose it's low tide, baby, just get in the water with it/ Boy, it's waist deep, no need to hold it back/ Stay with it, baby, keep the cuff on””
There's also some lyrical overlap between “Tyrant” and the fan favorite “Alien Superstar.” In the first, Bey sings “Lady with a whip, want what she wantna want, ok,” while declaring, “Category: bad bitch, I'm the bar/ Alien superstar/ Whip, whip,” in the second.

“Sweet ★ Honey ★ Buckiin”, “Alien Superstar” & “Pure / Honey”
As a three-part track, “Sweet ★ Honey ★ Buckiin” is predictably filled with allusions to many Renaissance Pieces. In the second verse of “Sweet”, the first part of the song, Beyoncé sings, “Ridin' through just to put my eyes on you/ You are the superstar” Of course, these lyrics are reminiscent of the beloved “Alien Superstar”, in which she declares, “Lingerie reflecting the bar mirror/ Category: hot bitch, I'm the bar/ Alien Superstar.”
Later, on the “Honey” section of “Sweet ★ Honey ★ Buckiin,” Beyoncé plays up the stickiness of honey, crooning, “You're stuck on me/ All night/ Put a flower in/ Stuck in me all night.” In “Honey”, its second half of the Renaissance “Pure / Honey,” he cries, “I'll get you stuck, stuck in my love/ Stuck in my honey/ Sweet, my love!”
Ms. Honey B sure knows how to work double duty!

“Riiverdance” & “Thique”
It is a coincidence that “Riiverdance”, one of the Cowboy Carter tracks that he leans particularly towards his sonics Renaissancehas similar lyrics to a real one Renaissance Section?
Where the 'bounce on that shit' chorus anchors 'Riiverdance', Beyoncé extends it to “Trick”, in which she sings, “And hurry, quick, 'fore the moment's over/ I like what I hear, I might be sleeping in/ Screaming, 'Beyoncé,' ounces of chocolate/ Sit on it, bounce it, bounce it.”
