You want to be among the first to know how many Oscar nominations Barbie and Oppenheimer collect? You can tune into the announcement of the 96th Academy Awards nominations on Tuesday, January 23, and hear them as Hollywood's biggest stars and most powerful executives receive the news. Just one catch: You have to get up early, especially if you're on the West Coast. The live presentation starts at (gulp) 5:30 am PT/8:30 a.m. ET.
Actors Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid will announce the nominations in all 23 categories in a live presentation from the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California.
The short program will be broadcast globally on Oscar.com, Oscars.org and the Academy's digital platforms (TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook) and will air on national broadcast and news streaming programs, including ABC Good morning America, ABC News Live and Disney+. The Oscars have been broadcast on ABC since 1976.
We will find out which of the three qualified Barbie songs – “Dance the Night”, “I'm Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For?” – are nominated for Best Original Song. Oscar rules only allow two songs from a film to be nominated.
We'll find out if Diane Warren earns her 15th nomination – and seventh in a row – for 'The Fire Inside' from Flamin' Hot.
We'll find out if the late Robbie Robertson becomes the first composer in 47 years to receive a posthumous nomination for Best Original Score. Robertson will likely be nominated for his work in Martin Scorsese's project Killers of the Flower Moon. The last composer to be nominated posthumously in this category was the great Bernard Herrmann, in the 1977 telecast. He had two of the five nominations, for Taxi driver and Obsession.
We'll find out which eight films will compete with 'Barbenheimer' for Best Picture. (There are 10 nominations in this category.) The films expected to face Barbie and Oppenheimer is American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Past Lives, Poor Things and The Zone of Interest.
The 96th Academy Awards will air on Sunday, March 10, with the funny and personable Jimmy Kimmel hosting for the fourth time.
The nominations will be announced in two groups on Tuesday. The Academy cautions that these categories are not listed in order of presentation and are subject to change, but this should give you a general idea of what to expect.
