IAN SWEET, Jilian Medford's recording project, has shared a new version of Broken Social Scene's indie classic, “Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl.” stream the song below.
Medford's version of the song begins by tapping into the undefined nostalgia of the 2002 original, complete with atmospheric synths and vocal effects. As the song continues, huge guitar chords open the instrumental and Medford's soulful vocals jump to the front of the mix.
“Broken Social Scene's music has always felt like the equivalent of a hug, and I think at some point everyone has to have *that* moment with 'Anthems For A Seventeen Year-Old Girl,'” he said of the song. “It so poignantly highlights the difficulty of trying to exist in the moment of being a teenager while simultaneously looking ahead to the inevitable transitions on the horizon. “You want to cry…and you should cry.”
“In a nutshell: that. Damned. Crush it,” she added. And while covering someone else's work is strange and almost always feels like maybe it shouldn't be done, I'm willing to gush that I never want to escape this song. With this small act I may not be able to now! The original is essential, other versions have taken it to incredible places too, and now I've recorded my version in the hopes that a few more people can scream the lyrics at the top of their lungs and FEEL FUCKING AMAZING doing it.”
IAN SWEET's last album was 2023. SUCKER. Read his track-by-track breakdown of the project here. He is also in the midst of his 2024 tour, where he will join Caroline Rose and Nation of Language. Check out their full list of upcoming concerts below and get tickets. here.
