The East Coast-West Coast bragging rights battle heads to baseball's diamond with the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers battling it out in the 2024 World Series.
Major League Baseball announced Friday (Oct. 25) that the league has selected two rap legends who are returning to their shores, as Bronx native Fat Joe and lifelong Los Angeles Dodger fan Ice Cube are set to appear before games second and third.
Cube will take the mound first Saturday night (Oct. 26) before Game 2 to warm up the Dodger faithful with “It Was A Good Day” and “Bow Down.”
Fat Joe will have his turn on Monday in Game 3 where Joey Crack will take Yankee Stadium to an “Empire State of Mind” with custom renditions of “New York” and “All the Way Up.”
“Both stars are lifelong fans of their hometown teams and are excited for the opportunity to prepare their fans for this year's World Series game,” MLB said in a statement. “The performances will take place after the national anthem each night and will air during Fox Sports' exclusive pregame coverage.”
MLB continued to lean into the music history of New York and Los Angeles. The championship celebrated the pairing of iconic music cities with Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' “Empire State of Mind” and 2Pac and Dr. “California Love.” Dre soundtracking the World Series as part of MLB's “Empire State of California Love,” which boasts a 30-second video starring Yankees and Dodgers stars Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani.
Game 1 of the World Series is set for Friday night (October 25) with the Yankees and Dodgers kicking off a highly anticipated series battling for the MLB crown. It's the first World Series appearance for the Yankees since 2009 as NYY looks to end their World Series drought. As for LA, the Dodgers won the title in 2020 during the shortened season of the COVID-19 pandemic.
