The film, produced and developed by A24, reinterprets Akira Kurosawa's thriller of the same name
The great philosopher Ice Spice once said, “How can I lose if I'm already chosen?” The Bronx rapper's statements have manifested into the kind of big screen debut young actors often dream of. According VarietyIce Spice will star alongside Denzel Washington in Spike Lee's upcoming film High and lowproduced and developed by A24.
Currently in production, High and low re-interprets Akira Kurosawa's thriller of the same name from 1963. The film is set to hit theaters before entering the streaming ecosystem via Apple TV+. It also marks the first reunion between Lee and Washington in nearly two decades. The pair recently collaborated as a director and actor Inside Man in 2006.
Apple Original Films released a teaser for High and low earlier today, April 10, sharing a photo of Lee and Washington flashing five fingers at the camera. The film will be the fifth with them, together Inside Man (2006), Mo' Better Blues (1990), Malcolm H (1992), and He has game (1998).
Ice Spice's filmography is just starting to take shape as the movie comes together, but her music discography is already full of hits. The rapper plans to release her debut album Y2K this year as a follow-up to her successful EP in 2023 Like…? and her Grammy-nominated appearance on Taylor Swift's 'Karma' remix.
But a stint in Hollywood never felt out of reach for the Bronx native, who has been thoroughly drawn to the art of filmmaking. “I love movies. I always wanted to be a part of that, whether it was [starring in] or helping to direct it,” Ice Spice said Teen Vogue in June 2023. She tried to convince her mom to let her attend a performing arts school that specialized in filmmaking, but the idea was vetoed.
“I was crazy about it for years,” she admitted, adding: “I remember for a long time I was so tight. I could have been the biggest director in New York. to hell;”
