Artists have been performing at the Olympic opening and closing ceremonies for decades, and with artists like Lady Gaga and Céline Dion kicking off the Paris 2024 Olympics, we look back at some of our favorite performances from the past.
K-pop group XO, who performed during the closing ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, performed their song “Power.” In 2016, Brazilian superstar Anitta performed during the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics alongside Brazilian legends Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. They sang a classic Brazilian song while celebrating Rio’s famous Carnival.
The 2012 London Olympics were packed with incredible performers during the opening and closing ceremonies, from Jessie J to Queen, Sir Paul McCartney, Ed Sheeran, One Direction and the Spice Girls. In 2000, during the Sydney Olympics, Kylie Minogue performed during the closing ceremony. The Australian superstar’s cover of ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” was considered one of the highlights of the night.
And the 2024 Paris Olympics weren’t the first time Céline Dion performed at the Games. She also performed during the opening ceremony of the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games, singing “The Power of the Dream.”
