2023 Luminate Year-End Report Reveals Canadians Love Oldies, Afrobeats and Country
In 2023, overall album consumption in Canada increased, while album sales — including physical and digital — fell slightly, according to Luminate year-end music showcase released this week.
While Luminate usually publishes a separate Canadian report, this year the country's data is included in the full global report.
In Canada, catalog sales are strong. Luminate compared catalog consumption growth to current release consumption and found that in Canada, catalog accounted for 73.1% of music consumption while current releases accounted for only 26.9%. Catalog consumption also rose more than current consumption last year, to 17.4% versus 9.1%.
Canada came in ninth on Luminate's list of the top 10 countries in streaming volume, with 145.3 billion streams. However, Canada does not appear in the top 10 countries based on the streaming growth list, where India took the top spot. Canada is also one of five countries outside the United States where hip-hop and R&B perform best in streaming.
In Canada, Afrobeats had a big year thanks to Rema and Selena Gomez's “Calm Down” (which finished second on Luminate's top 10 songs of 2023 in Canada from audio and video-on-demand streams) but Latin it has music struggle to overcome the same way as in the United States, with 2023 heavy hitters Peso Pluma and Karol G failing to land on the year-end Canadian charts. Still, Country is very popular: Morgan Wallen is in Canada's top 10 albums of 2023 in total equivalent album units, finishing at No. 1 with One thing at a time and in No. 4 with Dangerous: The Double album. Further down the list is Luke Combs I'm getting old at No. 9.

Rêve finds some “Modern Love” on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100
This week marks the first Billboard Canadian Hot 100 since the holidays, and with seasonal songs dropping, there's plenty of room for upheavals on the charts. The opening certainly benefited Montreal dance-pop artist Rêve, who has one new chart entry this week: Her new song, “Contemporary Love,” reaches No. 77.
This is not Rêve's first appearance on the Canadian Hot 100. Her single “Whitney” peaked at No. 68 in 2023 Year-End Canadian Hot 100 and broke the top 10 Advertising signDance/Mix Show Airplay chart in the United States. A previous single, “CTRL + ALT + DEL”, reached No. 38 on the Canadian Hot 100 and was certified platinum. In 2023, Rêve released their debut full-length, Return of Saturnand appeared in Advertising signSeries 's Dance Artist of the Month. He also won a Juno Award for Breakthrough Artist.
“Modern Love”, an excerpt Return of Saturn, was released alongside a music video in July. The track picks up steam after the appearance of Guest judge Rêve Canada's Drag Race in late 2023, where he gave pointers to contestants in a girl group challenge. The energetic dance-pop track, with lots of '80s bass and drums, as well as a fast-paced chorus, has an intensity that could propel it further up the charts.
Also making moves on the Canadian Hot 100 this week is Tate McRae, who returns to No. 1 with “Greed” after a holiday break. The Calgary pop star is also blowing up in the States, having just landed at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, behind Jack Harlow's “Lovin On Me” and Taylor Swift's “Cruel Summer.” Can it have enough momentum to take the No. 1 spot in the coming weeks?
Notably, McRae currently has two other songs on the Canadian Hot 100: “exes” at No. 19 and “run for the hills,” which reached a new peak at No. 34. Both also enter the US Hot 100. – Rosie Long Decter
