As reported today (October 21), former Iron Maiden singer Paul Di'Anno has passed away at the age of 66. Now, Maiden have paid tribute to their former frontman, calling him a “trailblazing presence.”
“We are all deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Paul Di'Anno today,” reads a statement from Maiden on the band's social media channels. “Paul's contribution to Iron Maiden was immense and helped set us on the path we have been on as a band for almost five decades. “His pioneering presence as a leader and vocalist, both on stage and on our first two albums, will be fondly remembered not only by us, but also by fans around the world.”

The statement continued: “We are very grateful to have had the opportunity to catch up a couple of years ago and spend time with him once again. On behalf of the band, [co-managers] Stick [Smallwood] and andy [Taylor]and the entire Iron Maiden team, we extend our deepest condolences to Paul's family and close friends. Rest in peace Pablo.”
Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris, who founded the legendary British metal band in 1975, added his own tribute, writing: “It's so sad he's gone. I was in touch with him recently while we were texting about West Ham and their ups and downs. At least he was still playing until recently, it was something that kept him active, being there whenever he could. We will all miss him. Rest in peace mate.”
As mentioned in the collective statement, current Maiden members reconnected with Di'Anno in recent years. The band shared a photo of Harris and Di'Anno together, while we recently reported on current singer Bruce Dickinson meeting Di'Anno for the first time over the summer.
Di'Anno, who was confined to a wheelchair in recent years, died after battling a series of health problems. No specific cause of death has been revealed so far.
