J. Cole headlined his annual Dreamville festival last night (April 7) at Dorothea Dix Park. The performance came just days after Cole dissed Kendrick Lamar on new song “7 Minute Drill,” and Cole took time during his set to address the track, explaining that he felt conflicted about creating and releasing it.
Cole began his speech by saying how proud he was of the work that closes out '7 Minute Drill', It may be deleted later. “I'm so proud of this project, except for one part,” the rapper he said. “It's a part of this shit that makes me feel like, man, this is the dumbest shit I've ever done in my fucking life, right?”
Cole went on to refer to Kendrick Lamar's “Like That” — the song that sparked the artists' recent feud — as “that bazooka that fell on mother's game,” and said he felt a lot of pressure to respond to Lamar. “I was conflicted because, first of all, I know my heart—you know what I mean?—and, for one, I know how I feel about my peers, these two n****s that I've just been blessed to stand next to this game [Drake and Kendrick Lamar]let alone chase, they chase greatness, right? So I felt conflicted because I'm like, bruh, I know I don't really feel any way. But people want to see blood!”
J. Cole continued, “I moved in a way that I feel, mentally I feel bad about it.” He also said that he was trying to be competitive and “friendly” with “7 Minute Drill” but that, ultimately, the latter song “didn't fit my spirit.”
After explaining himself, Cole had two questions for the Raleigh, North Carolina crowd: “How many people think Kendrick Lamar is one of the biggest moms to ever touch a fucking microphone? Dreamville, you love Kendrick Lamar, right?' He also gave his own answer: “As do I.”
