Polish composer Jan AP Kaczmarek, who won an Oscar in 2005 for his music Finding his neverland, died on Tuesday (May 21). It was 71.
Kaczmarek's death was announced by the Polish Music Foundation, which had been informed of his death by the composer's wife. Kaczmarek suffered from MSA, a rare degenerative neurological disorder.
He composed music for films made in Europe and Hollywood, such as 1995 TOTAL eclipse with Leonardo DiCaprio and in 2002 Unfaithful starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane.
Global fame came when he won the Academy Award for Best Original Score for the biographical fantasy Finding his never countryinspired by the life of author JM Barrie, starring Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet.
Born in Poland in 1953, Kaczmarek wanted to be a diplomat and studied law, but a brief association with Jerzy Grotowski's avant-garde theater led him to a musical career.
In 1989 he settled in Los Angeles, but towards the end of his life he lived in Krakow in southern Poland.
He is survived by his second wife, Aleksandra Twardowska-Kaczmarek, and five children.
