Jason Derulo has opened up about breaking his neck.
On the latest episode of Paris Hilton’s I Am Paris podcast, the RnB icon reflected on breaking his neck in 2012.
Jason explained that the accident happened when he fell on his head and broke his C2 vertebrae while practising back tucks for his 2012 Future History world tour.
The artist added that he suffered a “hangman’s break,” which is an injury in the neck that occurs when a person is hung.
“As soon as it happened I heard a big crack and I was just like ‘holy s**t, is this it? Is this how it all ends?'” Jason remembered. “All the thoughts you could imagine were going through my head at the time.”
“And I remember thinking to myself ‘Oh s**t my mum is in the car waiting for me outside,’ and I did not want to scare her, I did not want to alarm her,” he continued. “So after five minutes of lying on the ground I got myself together and walked to the car holding my neck.”
The Glad U Came hitmaker explained that he then calmly asked his mum to take him to the hospital.
“And I’m like ‘Mum I think I hurt myself a little bit inside we should probably go to the hospital just to check it out.’ Every single bump felt like hell on earth,” he told Paris. “I’m just dying in that passenger seat but I didn’t want to let her know that.”
Jason went on to explain that he was lucky to be alive.
“This could have ended up way crazier. I could have ended up paralysed or worst (sic),” he said. “And (the doctor) was like ‘That is the good news that you are still here with us and you can move all your limbs. The bad news is that you are going to be out (recovering) for seven months.'”
Jason noted that for months after his accident, he was unable to do anything without help.
“I went from having all the reins in my life and be in control of my life to not having any kind of control at all,” he recalled. “Not being able to tie my shoes, not being able to take a shower myself. That was the first time in my life where I felt like I had no control.”
