Two months later filing for divorce from his wife of 11 years, Jason Isbell has publicly commented on his split from Amanda Shires. During a recent appearance on Broken Record Podcast, the musician carefully dealt with the breakup of their marriage, which came to light earlier this month.
“I think I will try to be honest in every way I legally can. There are certain things we've agreed not to talk about,” Isbell said on the podcast. “But I think I can still manage to tell people who I am and what the truth is from my point of view. It's one of those things that it's not a failure that ends, you know? I think we did a lot of really cool things together and I have really good memories of all of them, and I don't regret any of them, even the hard ones.”
The musician compared this outlook to his pursuit of sobriety, when he similarly accepted the highs and lows as part of shaping him into the person he is now. Throughout their relationship, Isbell and Shires openly acknowledged the challenges Isbell's past drinking brought to their family as they both had successful and demanding music careers. Sayers played a role in helping him enter rehab early. “It started out as a cool night, you know, and it ended up being the worst night ever, ever, ever,” he has said in the past. WNYC. “At that point, I had nothing to do with him. Because I was very angry the next morning.”
In the podcast, Isbell added: “There will come a time when the wounds are not fresh, there will come a time when I can take all of that and put it into my work in an honest and real way, but it makes sense to me ».
But he says he doesn't want to turn his latest struggles into music. “I will be patient and in the meantime I have many other things to write. That's one thing I think a lot of songwriters lack is inspiration,” he said. “You don't need it, man. You don't need it, it's everywhere. If you can't look out your window and find 20 things to write about, then you're not a serious songwriter yet. Because it's everywhere.”
Last weekend, Isbell and his band the 400 Unit made their debut at New York's Radio City Music Hall, playing a set that leaned heavily on the group's latest album. Weathervanes.
