Jelly Roll is a big fan of Eminem even before his duet with the rapper on NBC Live From Detroit: The Concert at Michigan Central special, he learned that the feeling is mutual.
In an interview at The Howard Stern Show On Wednesday (June 12), the country star revealed that Em's manager approached him personally about the collaboration at one of Jelly's concerts in Detroit last year. “We're all hanging out backstage, and I'm like, 'Hey, does Marshall even know who I am?' recalls the “Son of a Sinner” singer. “He's like, 'Yeah, that's why I'm here, man. Marshall loves you. I want to find you all together.”
Months later, when the “Houdini” artist's team was crafting his performance for the special, they specifically requested that Jelly be the one to sample Aerosmith's “Dream On” on Em's “Sing for the Moment.” “They called back and said, 'Eminem wants to know if you'd do a song with him,'” she told Stern. “My body catches me. I was like, 'man, I'm so into it'.”
“I was so nervous,” Jelly continued. “It definitely wasn't my best performance — you could see the nerves on my face. This song has done a lot for me in dark times of my life as well. I am a lover of life. There isn't a white kid in the world who hasn't heard Eminem rap.”
“There's not enough praise for him,” added the ACM Award winner. “He's arguably the best rapper who ever, ever lived. You are literally meeting the best in his craft.”
The interview comes about a week after the special was taped in Michigan on June 6. Bunnie XO, who is married to Jelly, posted a sweet video of her husband meeting his idol for the first time at a rehearsal for their show. “When the GOAT meets the GOAT,” she captioned the clip.
A few days later, Jelly spoke about the experience in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “When I think about the coolest moments of my career, right now at the top, there has to be this thing where I got to sing with Eminem in Detroit,” he said on the way out. “It was unreal.”
