When Jelly Roll appeared The Howard Stern Show on Wednesday (June 12), opened up about his past arrests — and shared a funny story related to one of those arrests.
“You must have been the worst drug dealer because you got busted 47 times,” Stern told Jelly Roll in an excerpt from the interview.
“So bad,” Jelly Roll replied. “I was the worst criminal ever.”
“How did you get so caught?” Stern asked, to which Jelly Roll replied, “My success rate at running from the police is zero and 20. But I was probably 15 and I got arrested one time and I was in a Xanax bar, Howard — he never said that story, but you know how Xanax makes you a little slow anyway? And in my head, when the police pulled us over, I was like, “I'm just going to run.” So I opened the door, and in my mind, I jumped out and ran into a field and almost made it. I was so fat and Xanaxed, I stood out and took two steps.”
Laughing, Jelly Roll continued: “The policeman was standing there watching me and I fell. And finally, he just laid on top of me. He felt so bad for me, he didn't even charge me for trying to run.”
These days, of course, Jelly Roll has traded arrests for chart hits, sold-out shows and headlining festival stages, including his recent gig at Nissan Stadium as part of CMA Fest in downtown Nashville. Jelly Roll just scored his fourth consecutive No. 1 Country Airplay hit with “Halfway to Hell” and just released “I Am Not Okay,” which is the first single from his upcoming album. He also has a number of headline acts on his Beautifully Broken tour, which kicks off on August 27 and runs through October.
