Jelly Roll made his Emmys debut on Sunday night (September 15) to soundtrack the “in memoriam” track with his heartwarming song “I Am Not Okay.”
When the country producer took the stage at Los Angeles' Peacock Theater, he performed his song — the Beautifully broken single that has so far reached No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 — saying, “I think music is healing. I believe music can heal. I also think the narrative is just as cathartic. I hope this song can serve as a healing moment for those who mourn the storytellers we lost this year. If you're feeling lost or alone tonight, I want you to know that it's okay to not always be okay.”
The Nashville star wore an all-black suit and took center stage, with a string section behind him adding to the song's emotional weight. A host of famous names and faces we lost this year appeared on the big screen behind Jelly Roll, including Richard Simmons, Martin Mull, Shannen Doherty, Carl Weathers, Richard Lewis, Donald Sutherland and James Earl Jones, who died just last year week in age. 93.
The final name and face was Bob Newhart, who remained on the screen as Jimmy Kimmel took the stage, laughing dryly: “And the award for the most missed deceased industry professional goes to…” Kimmel went on to pay tribute to the comedian actor, whose 1960 work The Button-Down Mind by Bob Newhart was the first comedy album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
