Jerrod Carmichael recently expressed regret for the criticism Dave Chappelle publicly in an interview at Breakfast Club.
Comedian Jerrod Carmichael is backing away from his public criticism of Dave Chappelle over his recent comedies and focus on transgender people, based on comments he made during an appearance on Breakfast Club. “I deeply regret saying anything about Dave Chappelle to the press. I want to say I'm sorry about that,” Carmichael said during the episode that aired on Tuesday (April 16).
Carmichael took time to express his admiration for Chappelle, calling him a “shining light in a dying industry” and claiming he's “more important than ever” because today's comedians are “just putting out clips of themselves doing crowdfunding online and the we call it art, and it is not art.” He also elaborated on his review: “The review I had was that of a fan, someone who respects him so much that I want him to focus his genius on a wide range of subjects. He really started to focus on one thing. I'm a big fan of Jay-Z. If Jay-Z made three albums about trans people, I'd be like, 'What's wrong with Jay-Z?'”
The comedian, who is on a press tour for his HBO documentary series, Jarrod Carmichael Reality Showhad raised eyebrows with his comments about Chappelle in a GQ interview in 2022. “Chappelle, you know what comes up when you Google your name, bro? Is this the legacy? Is your legacy a bunch of opinions on trans shit? It's a strange hill to die on.' He also spoke further about Chappelle's thoughts in one esteemed sir interview last month: “He took it as 'F–k Dave Chappelle,' because he's an egomaniac,” Carmichael said. “He wanted me to apologize to him publicly or to somebody.”
When asked if he and Chappelle had spoken since his earlier comments, Carmichael simply said, “Yeah, I know Dave. And I'll tell you, frankly, from now on, any thoughts I have about Dave I'm going to direct to a phone call to Dave. I will never do it again. I apologize for that… I don't need it, I don't want the attention, it's been too long.”
