Early tells us how he modeled the special after The last waltzthe iconic concert film centered on The Band. He reveals the stories behind the songs he and his band cover in the special, including Britney Spears’ “Overprotected” and Neil Young’s “After the Goldrush,” and previews the new covers and material he’ll be bringing on the road for his upcoming tour (get tickets) here). The comedian also talks about the creation of the character he plays in Now more than everand how growing up gay in Nashville with minister parents led him to have a comedic style that reflects performative behavior and liberal stance.
Elsewhere, Early talks about the attention he’s received since appearing in Taylor Swift’s “Anti-Hero” video, in which he plays the pop superstar’s son. “I don’t think it’s added anything to my audience; sales are through the roof, obviously now that I’ve done the video,” he jokes. “People are so excited about it, more than anything else I’ve done before, in a way that’s sometimes overwhelming! Teenagers, teens, really think it’s cool that I’ve done that, and I don’t think they care about anything else I’ve done, so it’s been really sweet.”
