John Mayer will be rocking guitar at the Las Vegas Sphere with Dead & Company for the group’s “Dead Forever – Live at Sphere” residency — but he recently encountered a small bump in the road.
The “Your Body Is a Wonderland” singer took to Instagram on Thursday (Aug. 1) — the first day of the new string of residency dates — to reveal that last week, he injured his left index finger in a truck door. “The first thing that went through my mind was ‘I really need that finger in a week,’” he wrote alongside a photo of his finger, wrapped with bandage. “I need all my fingers, but the left index is the team captain of my fretting hand. It will heal just fine, but will be out of commission for a while.”
He continued, “In the meantime, I have spent every day practicing guitar using the other three fingers and I think I have it sounding pretty good! I’ve always felt like every part of me belongs to these shows, and it’s my responsibility to return to the stage each night without screwing up the equipment, and I’m sorry for the misadventure here. The power of the music and the love for these shows will prevail! See ya tonight.”
Dead & Company’s latest string of Las Vegas dates take place Aug. 1-3 and Aug. 7-10, an extension to what’s said to be a “must-see” immersive experience that celebrates the legacy of the Rock Hall-inducted Grateful Dead, combining their songbook with the Sphere’s technical spectacles.
