Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears have withdrawn their apologies, most likely to each other.
Justin Timberlake, who celebrated his 43rd birthday with a free concert at New York City's Irving Plaza on Wednesday night, introduced his song “Cry Me a River” by saying, “I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to absolutely no one.” . “Timberlake did not name who his retraction was necessarily directed at, but the Jan. 31 concert coincided with the 20th anniversary of the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show, where Timberlake exposed Janet Jackson's breast on live television.
The claim also follows the highly publicized breakup between Timberlake and Britney Spears, who dated between 1999 and 2002. “Cry Me a River” was speculated to be about Spears and her confirmed infidelity with dancer Wade Robson, and arrived with a music video. which featured a blonde woman who looked like Spears.
Meanwhile, Britney Spears had previously referenced “Cry Me a River,” amid dozens of revelations about her relationship with Timberlake, in her 2023 memoir. The woman in me. She claimed that the backlash from the video turned her into a “whore who had broken the heart of America's golden boy,” while Timberlake was “happily running around Hollywood.”
But when Timberlake released his comeback single “Selfish” this month, Spears initially offered her support. In a since-deleted Sunday Instagram post, Spears wrote, “I want to apologize for some of the things I wrote about in my book. If I offended any of the people I really care about, I'm deeply sorry…” She then praised “Selfish” and wrote, “I also wanted to say that I'm in love with Justin Timberlake's new song, 'Selfish' 🌹 It's so good and how Is it that every time I see Justin and Jimmy together I laugh so much? PS: 'Sanctified' is amazing too 🤩.”
Now, Spears appears to be regaining her support. “Someone told me that someone was talking shit about me in the streets!!! Do you want to take it to the court or are you going to go home crying to your mom like you did last time? “Not sorry!!!” the star wrote on Instagram on Thursday.
Timberlake has yet to respond to Spears' Instagram post, and it's still unclear who exactly his (non-)apology was directed at: Jackson, Spears, or the public at large. Timberlake previously publicly apologized to Janet Jackson and Britney Spears in an Instagram post from 2021. “I want to specifically apologize to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson, both individually, because I care about and respect these women and I know I failed,” Timberlake wrote. “I want to take responsibility for my own mistakes in all of this, as well as be part of a world that uplifts and supports.”
Beyond the 2021 release, however, Timberlake has not directly addressed the details of Spears' 2023 memoir. But with her fifth album Everything I thought I was Along the way, there may be some more enlightening insights from the pop singer yet to come.
