Justin Timberlake is back and this time he's in one selfish disposal.
The pop star released his new single “Selfish” on Thursday morning (January 25), marking JT's first solo release in over five years. The video for the song opens with Timberlake bowing to a clapping audience, then slipping behind a curtain in a rehearsal studio as the warm keyboard and subtle rhythms of the mid-tempo song swell.
“If they saw what I saw/ They'd fall like I fell/ They don't know what you want/ And, baby I'd never tell,” he sings on the song about undying devotion, vowing to never let his lover go. . “Because your lips were made for mine/ And my heart would be in a straight line/ If it wasn't beating for you all the time,” Timberlake adds in the pre-chorus of the song he co-wrote with Louis Bell (Taylor Swift ), Cirkut (Maroon 5), Theron Thomas and Amy Allen and co-produced by Bell and Cirkut.
The pensive, Alice in Wonderland-Bradley J. Calder (SZA)-directed style video focuses entirely on Timberlake, who enters a small door in the soundstage that takes him down a slanted hallway, where he appears as a giant trying to answer a red phone. wall.
“So if I get jealous, I can't help it/ I want every bit of you, I guess I'm selfish,” he sings in his signature falsetto on the normalized chorus. “It's bad for my psyche, but I can't fight it/ When you're out looking like you/ But you can't hide it, no,” he adds. The low-key song remains similarly mellow throughout, while the video finds a frustrated Timberlake repeatedly shredding the miniature sets and stepping outside into the rain looking pensive before cutting to the singer in a custom suit on a dimly lit stage and shows off his signature smooth dance moves.
The singer has teased the cut in a number of ways over the past few days, including a live debut in his hometown and a post featuring what appeared to be the official cover, shot by photographer Charlotte Rutherford. Then a clip depicting JT behind the stage curtain, thanking the audience to the sound of an old school analog drum machine and lo-fi instrument, lifted from the video's intro.
JT debuted the silky R&B track live at his free concert in Memphis on Jan. 19, pulling the curtain on the first track from his upcoming sixth album, titled Everything I thought it was. 'Selfish' is the first taste of the follow-up to 2018's musky solo LP Man of the Woodswhich debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. EITIW is expected to be released on March 15.
Although his solo music career has been in deep hibernation, Timberlake returned to his band roots last year when he reunited with *NSYNC for “Better Place,” which accompanied the animated family film starring JT. Trolls Band Together. The track bowed at No. 25, for the lucky 13 of *NSYNCu appearance on the Billboard Hot 100 and first chart appearance since “Girlfriend” with Nelly reached No. 5 — way back in 2002.
The 10-time Grammy winner will remind fans what they've been missing when he's the musical guest on Saturday night live this weekend, with Dakota Johnson hosting. There will be more action on the small screen when JT stops The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon next Thursday. The singer announced another small capacity performance in New York on Wednesday, revealing he will play the 1,100-capacity Irving Plaza on Jan. 31.
