“This is not okay and they’re lucky I didn’t instinctively swing,” the musician said about the incident from her Tampa concert where a fan gripped tightly onto her arm as she walked through the crowd
Kacey Musgraves might be reconsidering the access she provides to her personal space during her live shows. In Tampa, Florida, on Friday, the singer-songwriter was making her way through the crowd using a floor-level catwalk when a fan gripped tightly onto her arm. In the moment, she responded only verbally. But the following night, in Hollywood, Florida, Musgraves shared that she briefly felt her fight or flight response.
“Last night, this Tampa bitch, y’all, she kinda ruined it,” Musgraves told the audience at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. “She kind of ruined it for everybody. I thought I was going to have to get real East Texas on her, take off my earrings. Florida goes hard.”
Musgraves shared clips of the incident on her Instagram Story on Sunday evening, writing: “This is not okay and they’re lucky I didn’t instinctively swing.”
Videos from the Tampa performance show Musgraves traveling calmly past the audience while performing “Lonely Millionaire” from her latest album, Deeper Well. When she gets close to the barricade of one of the general admission floor sections, an attendee can be seen reaching over and grabbing her arm. Just as security started to step in, Musgraves faced the handy fan and exclaimed: “What the fuck?” The singer was stopped only for a second, continuing the song after exhaling an annoyed “Jesus fucking Christ” as she walked away.
“Just because an artist — or any human — is within reach you have zero right to treat them like an object,” Musgraves continued on Instagram. “This was aggressive, was dealt with, and will not be tolerated at my shows. I walk out in the space designated for me to safely move through the crowd so I can connect on a closer level. It’s fun until someone has to ruin it.”
