If you're still wiping the steam off your screen from Katy Perry's NSFW debut performance of “I'm His, He's Mine” with Doechii during her career at the 2024 VMAs this week, click because the official video is equally challenging.
The TORSO-directed music video for the third single from Perry's upcoming 143 The album (due out September 20) was released on Friday morning (September 13) and combines some impressive green screen stunts with a shaky table dance atop a speeding car. The clip opens with Perry gracefully roaming the atmosphere in free fall as she hooks up with a hunky guy who looks a bit like her dashing skydiving fiance, Orlando Bloom.
“I'm his queen, I'm his freak/ I'm every woman he wants and needs,” Perry sings as she cradles the man's head as they push to the ground, before the camera cuts to a bikini dancing Doechii. in an elevator while delivering her own seductress, come: “I'm his boss, I'm that b–ch/ I'm every woman he knows there is.”
After Perry and her cloud ranger peel off her clothes during their skit — with no parachutes in sight, we might add — the scene shifts to the singer sprawled out on the hood of a gleaming chrome Corvette cruising through a suburb. Barcelona Street. Wearing an intricate black monokini with a skin-baring metal strap, Perry does splits and slithers through the windshield as she sings about “creepin' in his DMs” and “sleepin' in his sweatpants.”
Perry is then thrown from her moving car dance platform, falling into the arms of her hunky love interest, dressed in nothing but skimpy white underwear. The two women finally join in a soundstage where they crawl around each other on the floor before Doechii takes to the air for a drone-assisted celestial dance.
“I'm His” is clearly sampled from Crystal Waters' 1991 hit single “Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless),” featuring the hypnotic chorus “la da dee, la dee da.” Perry's first follows 143 single, “Woman's World” – which sparked criticism for featuring Dr. Luke – and the second centerpiece, “Lifetimes.”
As provocative as the visual is, it's PG-13 compared to the VMAs performance, during which the two singers huddled in sapphic buns and kissed in a moment that made Taylor Swift's jaw drop.
