Surfing the peaceful waves of the Pacific Ocean along with enjoying the San Diego breeze gave Kehlani the peace she needed to create their upcoming project.
Lani returned on Thursday (April 4) with their first offering of new music since 2022 Blue Water Road. The breezy “After Hours” hit the streaming services with good vibes that are prompting fans to get outside before summer.
The groovy track features a familiar drum build from Nina Sky's 2004 hit “Move Ya Body,” which reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
“We don't need to take it slow/ I'll hit the gas if you're ready/ I wanna speed it up, breathe in your clothes/ The way you touch my neck got me ready to fold,” he sings.
Kehlani meets Apple Music Zane Lowe on Thursday, where she described her love for “Move Ya Body” in terms of sampling and how she wanted to create more happy music instead of the sad tunes her fans cling to.
“Because those drums, when they drop, are so recognizable and everybody misses it. It's one of those things that falls and everybody goes 'Woo' and bends their knees and puts their hands on their knees,” he explained.
“Coming out of this pandemic to global tragedy to global tragedy to global tragedy, I felt like I wasn't really in a space to make something that felt super scary or super sad. I'm very honest about these things, but I want my art to provide some kind of life and fun. I want to hear that out there and I want to feel good.”
Kehlani has yet to reveal the title or release date of their anticipated LP. Her latest LP Blue Water Road peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard 200 and No. 8 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.
