Kelly Clarkson is basically into Weezer now. On Wednesday (May 15) Kelly Clarkson Show, the singer joined frontman Rivers Cuomo and drummer Patrick Wilson (on guitar) for a set of “Say It Ain't So” from the band's iconic self-titled album, “Blue.” Cuomo and Wilson loved their intermission so much he tweeted it “@kellyclarkson gave us a run for our money at Kellyoke.”
Weezer are in the midst of a 30th anniversary push for their Ric Ocasek-produced debut, which featured classic favorites like “Undone – The Sweater Song,” “Buddy Holly” and “Holiday.”
The Kellyoke set opened with Rivers crooning the song's dark first verse, with Clarkson joining in on the “oh yeah… okay” chorus before dropping the second verse with her buttery soul. “Pass the TV/ Fight Jimmy/ Something's Flashing/ Behind My Back/ The Bottle's About to Blow,” he belted out as Wilson and Cuomo picked up guitars and Clarkson joined the bespectacled rocker on the sated chorus. The back-and-forth between Clarkson and Cuomo was indeed terrific, and Rivers wasn't kidding when he said the showrunner added some serious spice to the show.
“I've literally never been cool in my life until now,” opened up Clarkson, who came dressed to play with the cardigan-loving couple in her own brown button-up sweater and jeans.
The duo also sat down on the couch with Clarkson to discuss the album's anniversary, but not before Kelly implored her audience to go see Weezer live on their Voyage to the Blue Planet tour with the Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr. a show, I'm just saying,” Clarkson told them, recounting a concert she saw several years ago that blew her mind.
Fellow guest Brooke Shields reflected emotionally on how much Weezer meant to her, revealing that she was blasting their music on the way to the studio that morning. The 10-minute segment quickly went off the rails, with Clarkson laughing about their previous rehearsals for the show, where she feared her energy clashed hilariously with Cuomo and Wilson's chill vibe hovering around 2.
After bonding with Shields over their mutual love of Pickleball, Cuomo and Wilson graciously sat down as Clarkson asked about the origins of the band's name (it was Cuomo's dad's nickname as a child), noting that he called her sister “Weese” when they were young. Kelly also made another connection, telling Cuomo that her daughter's name is River Rose, with Rivers musing that she was, indeed, named because, she said, she was born “between two rivers… you all lived between two rivers. This is true;”
“Yeah, here in Manhattan,” Cuomo said with a straight face, as the audience and Shields erupted into hysterical laughter at the singer's unnecessary geographic response. “I really want to host a show with you,” Clarkson said as Shields covered her eyes and mouth while moaning at the delightfully awkward exchange.
“Uh… should I continue?” Cuomo ruefully requested more face-covering giggles from Shields, who, not for nothing, noted that she was named after a babbling brook. Spoiler alert: Cuomo was actually named after three soccer players from the Italy and Brazil teams that played in the 1970 World Cup. “So I thought we had something in common there, but it turns out not,” Clarkson said. “I'm an Aquarius,” Wilson interjected helpfully. Later, Cuomo and Shields also (sort of) bonded and both appeared in productions of Greaseas Clarkson couldn't stop gushing about how much she enjoyed the conversation.
“This is literally my favorite panel we've ever had,” Clarkson squealed as she fell off her couch with giggles at the end of the segment.
