Singer put her own twist on the classic 1991 single
Kelly Clarkson’s latest musical cover proves something we already know to be true: There isn’t a genre she can’t conquer.
On her Kellyoke musical segment on Monday, Clarkson sang Metallica’s “Sad But True” and put her own spin on the 1991 classic.
In a clip for the segment, Clarkson stands on stage in the spotlight and stares into the camera as she softly sings the beginning of the song, piano keys accompanying her voice, essentially turning the hard rock song into a ballad. The music pauses when the Grammy-winning artist belts the same lyrics the song is titled after, “Sad but true,” Clarkson’s powerful vocals prompting cheers from the audience.
“You, you’re my mask/You’re my cover, you’re my shelter/You, you’re my mask/You’re the one who’s blamed,” Clarkson cries out while her house band rocks out to drums and guitars in the background.
Clarkson, who has hosted her talk show for five seasons, is no novice to covering popular singles across musical genres. From Katy Perry and Ariana Grande to Florence + the Machine and the White Stripes, the talk show host has spanned a range of song covers and even released a Kellyoke EP in 2022. Now, she can add Metallica to her long list of beloved covers and achievements.
