Kelly Clarkson got into her rock bag on Monday's (April 8) episode. Kelly Clarkson Showtaking to the stage for her daily segment Kellyoke in a black leather skirt and vintage Billy Joel concert t-shirt for a rousing ride Miley Cyrus2020 hit 'Midnight Sun'.
The smoldering single from Miley's seventh studio album, Plastic Hearts, is an homage to Stevie Nicks' 1981 solo hit “Edge of Seventeen,” and in Clarkson's hands it's lost none of the slow energy of the original. “Yeah, it's been a long night and the mirror's telling me to go home/ But it's been a long time since I've felt this good alone/ It's been years with my hands tied in your ropes/ Forever and ever, no more,” she sang Clarkson before launching into the confident chorus.
“I was born to run, I don't belong to nobody, oh no/ you don't have to love me,” she said as backup singers provided her soulful support. “Fire in my lungs, I can't bite the devil on my tongue, oh no/ You don't have to love me.”
Miley's song topped the Billboard Top Rock Albums chart in December 2000, and Monday's cover was the third time Clarkson has delved into Cyrus' work during the current season of her daytime talk show, following her views on “Jaded” and “Used To Be Young”? In 2000, she also covered Miley's OG hit “The Climb.” On Tuesday's (April 9) show, Clarkson went meta and did a Kellyoke cover of her own song, “My“, from 2023 Chemistry album.
