One of the hardest balancing acts in entertainment is looking polite and happy when the person on stage opens the prize envelope and doesn't read your name. That's where Kelsea Ballerini was on Sunday night at the 2024 Grammy Awards when Lainey Wilson's Bell Bottom Country he won her over Rolling Up the Welcome Mat in the Best Country album category.
Here's the thing. On Monday night (February 5), Ballerini, 30, explained in a Instagram Stories that what commentators and some viewers showed as a look of disappointment or displeasure was a perfectly normal, healthy reaction that did not deserve the harsh judgment it faced.
“Ohhh yes. You can be upset about your loss and happy about someone else's victory at the same time. Two things can be true and both have a valid and valuable place,” Ballerini wrote. “Reading the face and analyzing the reaction is unnecessary and hurts everyone.”
Most crucially, Ballerini said, “one woman's victory is a team victory. Should I write about it?'
The latter was an apparent reference to the huge night female performers had at this year's Grammys, one in which female artists won all of the Big Four Awards, including Taylor Swift who took home the trophy for fourth album of the year. Midnight album, as well as Miley Cyrus winning record of the year for “Flowers”, Billie Eilish took home song of the year for Barbie The soundtrack hit “What Was I Made For?” and Victoria Monét won best new artist.
Wilson's album has had a strong awards season, previously taking home album of the year at the Academy of Country Music Awards on May 11 and the Country Music Association Awards on November 8. is only the 9th album to complete the 'triple crown' of country music by winning all three of these top awards.
