“As all those affected by cancer know, such kind thoughts are the greatest comfort and encouragement,” the basilica said in a statement.
King Charles III made his first public appearance on Sunday since announcing he was being treated for an unspecified form of cancer.
The British monarch and his wife Queen Camilla were spotted near the Sandringham royal estate in England, with the royal couple walking to morning service at St Mary Magdalene Church. King Charles III smiled and waved to onlookers and photographers during the ride.
On February 5, Buckingham Palace revealed that after 75-year-old Charles underwent recent treatment for a “benign prostate enlargement”, “a separate matter of concern was raised”, which “subsequent diagnostic tests identified a form of cancer”. While Buckingham Palace did not specify which form of cancer, a royal source he told CNN that prostate cancer has been ruled out.
King Charles III – who will step down from public duties amid his medical ordeal – also made his first statement to the British people since his cancer diagnosis on Saturday.
“I would like to express my heartfelt thanks for the many messages of support and well wishes I have received in recent days,” the king said. “As anyone affected by cancer knows, such kind thoughts are the greatest comfort and encouragement.”
He continued, “It is equally encouraging to hear how sharing my own diagnosis has helped to promote public understanding and shine a light on the work of all those organizations who support cancer patients and their families in the UK and the wider world. My lifelong admiration for their tireless care and dedication is even greater as a result of my personal experience.”
