Kings of Leon returned after years of silence on Thursday (February 22nd) with the hilarious single 'Mustang'. The song is the first taste of the sibling group's upcoming ninth studio album, We can have fun (May 10), their first effort on new label Capitol Records and first full-length since 2021 When you see yourself.
According to a statement announcing the 12-song album, We can have fun is “a document of one of the great rock and roll bands of this era relaxing, trying new things and, yes, having fun.” The collection was recorded at Dark Horse Studios in Nashville and produced by Kid Harpoon (Harry Styles, Florence + the Machine). It's described as a return to the group's “hardcore roots” while also finding new gear. It's the sound of a band united in vision and purpose, free of all expectations, and the album the band says they always wanted to make.”
The driving “Mustang” is a classic KOL burner, with singer Caleb Followill promising that love is everywhere around an insistent, screeching bass line as he screams, “There's a mustang in town/ And it's calling me out/ Are you a mustang or a kitten? / What are you doing?'' while the song slowly builds into one of the band's signature radio choruses.
The Brook Linder-directed video for “Mustang” finds the band jamming on rooftops and bridges between a series of random images of a Roomba pulling a bunch of deflated balloons, urban combat LARPing, EMTs tending to a patient on a street of the city and men wearing animal masks run through a park with mysterious bags.
Caleb Followill said in a statement that the sessions for CWPHF it was “the most enjoyable record I've ever been a part of,” with drummer Nathan Followill adding, “It's like we allowed ourselves to be musically vulnerable. I love it when a rock band isn't ashamed to admit that every song doesn't have to be at 11.”
KOL also announced the dates for Live Nation's upcoming 26-date North American summer/fall tour, which kicks off August 14th at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas and will keep them on the road for an October 5th concert at the Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater in Bridgeport, CT.
The band canceled the remaining four dates of their US tour in support When you see yourself in September 2021 after the death of their mother, Betty Ann. KOL consists of brothers Caleb, Nathan and bassist Jared Followill and cousin guitarist Matthew Followill.
