It's no secret that the final season of the hit HBO series Game of Thrones left a lot to be desired as it led die-hard fans to campaign for a repeat of the entire six-episode season.
Now, years after that innocent final season aired, the show's top star Kit Harington (Jon Snow) is speaking out about the backlash the series caused from fans and why the Jon Snow spinoff series never happened. In a recent interview with GQ HypeHarington explained that he was surprised by the fan reaction to the latest episodes, saying: “I came in and everyone loved Thrones. I came out and everybody hated it,” says Harington. “I thought, what the hell is going on?”
Looking back at how things turned out during his final season Game of ThronesKit explains how he understands why fans may have felt how the series ended and points to fatigue on the part of the show's cast as to why everything seemingly fell apart in the end.
Per GQ Hype:
“I think if there was anything wrong with the end of Thrones, it's that we were all so tired that we couldn't go on any longer. And so I understand that some felt it was rushed and I might agree with them. But I'm not sure there was an alternative. I look at pictures of me from that last season and I look exhausted. I look spent. I didn't have another season in me.” And the reaction to the last episode in particular? “Everyone has a right to their opinion. I think mistakes were made, story-wise, towards the end maybe. I think there were some interesting choices that didn't quite work.”
It wasn't the acting at all, it was the writing. The writers didn't write a good enough ending to the saga. I'm just saying.
As for why the Jon Snow spinoff series is dead in the water, that's a bit more complicated. Without going into detail about what it would have been about and why it didn't make it, Kit and HBO decided to play it “safe” and not give fans anything else to complain about if the series turned out to be another struggle. case.
“I don't really want to say,” says Harington, reserved for the first time in our conversation, “because it starts a whole thing.” Even now, the Thrones fandom can be rowdy. “What I can tell you is that HBO came to me and said, 'Would you consider that?' My first reaction was no. And then I thought that there could be an interesting and important story about the soldier after the war. I felt there might be something left to say and a story to tell in a fairly limited way. We spent a few years back and forth developing it. And we just didn't… nothing excited us enough. In the end, I kind of caved in and said, “I think if we push this further and keep developing it, we could end up with something that's not good. And that's the last thing we all want.”
We won't lie, we would have tuned in regardless. We're still hoping that HBO and its writers will get their act together and revisit his world Game of Thrones after the White Walkers. What other threat is out there? Could Daenerys Targaryen still be alive? So many questions that will probably never be answered. SMH.
