Kittie has unveiled “Eyes Wide Open,” the Canadian metal band’s first new song in 13 years.
Last week, Kittie founder Morgan Lander announced the band's new non-alcoholic beer collaboration with Australia's We Are PIGS. What we didn't know is that Kittie also had a single on the horizon: the band's first new music since 2011. I failed.
After premiering on SiriusXM's Liquid Metal station on Tuesday (February 13), “Eyes Wide Open” is now available on streaming platforms and as a music video (watch below). The Nick Raskulinecz-produced song is a crushing return to form. Tight groove metal riffs backing Lander's commanding howls, recalling Vulgar exhibition-era Pantera with its combination of riffs and attitude.
“Our first new material in 13 years, 'Eyes Wide Open' is a truth-seeking vision,” Lander said in a press release. “It is a torch lit in the darkness of ignorance to reveal the true motives. 'Eyes Wide Open' is a lesson in trust, betrayal, and ultimately the ability to see behind the curtain to reveal everything. It was one of the first songs we wrote, we got back together after a long time of not creating, and I think you can really hear the fire rekindling in this song.”
Kittie also signed a new recording deal with Sumerian Records, which will release the band's new single and upcoming material.
“Sometimes incredible opportunities present themselves in surprising ways,” Lander said. “Just a few years ago we would never have imagined that we would be preparing to release new music as Kittie. “We have been given what feels like a second life and we are grateful to Ash and the Sumerian family for believing in us.”
Following their heyday in the 2000s, when the acclaimed albums Spit (2000) and Oracle (2001), Kittie would go on hiatus after 2013, playing a single date in Canada in 2017 before resurfacing for select shows in 2022.
Kittie played the inaugural Sick New World festival last year and will return to this year's Las Vegas event on April 27. They are also scheduled to perform at Welcome to Rockville on May 10 and at Sonic Temple on May 18.
