The Jesus and Mary Chain's return with jamcod established a new wave of momentum ahead of the March 8 release of their new album 'Glasgow Eyes' via Fuzz Club. Huw Stephens premiered the song on 6 Music, where it was also playlisted, and key streaming support included Spotify's Shoegaze Now and Tidal's Hot Rocks.
Now, The Jesus and Mary Chain are keeping that momentum going through 2024, notably the year of their 40th anniversary, as they share new single 'Chemical Animal'.
Creating an atmosphere of dense and sinister foreboding, 'Chemical Animal' is a dark and oppressive descent of a track, a tone that is completely in tune with the song's claustrophobic and haunted lyrics. While 'jamcod' reflects on the band's infamous 1998 show at the House of Blues in Los Angeles, which led to their initial breakup, 'Chemical Animal' also looks to the ghosts of their past for inspiration.
Jim Reid says, “Our work on our autobiography definitely merged with our work on the album. 'jamcod,' the album's first single, is about that night in 1998 at the House of Blues when the band broke up. 'Chemical Animal' is different but related .I was thinking about those dark days of chemical dependency. When you fall so deep into that hole that everything you do is on instinct. The drugs are the driving force. What gets you from a to ab is whether you can score. It was a horrible way to live and I am grateful to no longer live that way. One effect is that it made me aware of how our brains work, who we are, how we feel and what we do. “We depend on our neural chemistry, a chemistry that is beyond our control. “It is a biological curse from which we cannot escape.”
