Royal CMA Entertainer of the year, Lainey Wilson performed a medley of her “bellhouse,” as she calls it, along with some Southern Rock during an appearance on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series.
Wilson tackled her 19-minute performance of “Hang Tight Honey,” the second tune from her new album Tornadoreleased on August 23, about missing her “honey” while playing on the road.
After the upbeat piece, Wilson expressed her gratitude for playing NPR's Tiny officeadding, “That was an issue for us,” before moving on to what inspired the title of the major label's third album. “We decided to name the record Tornado because, well, that's been my life since we put out my last record Bell Bottom Country, just trying to keep one foot on the ground,” says Wilson. “I feel like my life has changed, but I feel like I haven't.”
Wilson slowed down the pace with the soulful, midtempo song “4x4xU,” written with Aaron Raitiere and Jon Decious, which she described as a song about holding your loved ones close (it's Wilson's latest single sent to country radio). He then invited the audience to sing along to “Ring Finger,” with its hit-the-road-Jack groove.
“I gotta make sure I feel like Lainey, the sister, the friend, the dog mom, the friend, so I can be the best version of myself that I can be for the artist,” Wilson shared before launching into the emotional ballad. “4x4xU.” “I have to keep living my life so I can keep writing my life.”
A Rolling Stone his album review Tornado credited the Louisiana native and Nashville star for bringing the listener directly to the heart of whatever she was singing. Before her latest performance of “Heart Like a Truck”, a hit single Bell Bottom CountryWilson called it her “theme song” chronicling the “scratches and dents and bumps” she experienced throughout her life.
