It must sorry laura jane grace she is not feeling herself. On “All Fucked Out,” her latest Mississippi Doctors-backed single, she explains her plight over a dusty tarp of country-punk sludge: “I'm out of the real thing/I'm dry as bread – stale & crusty/ All I have left are the edges.” For what it's worth, though, it sounds like he's doing the best he can, especially in the context of what inspired the song.
“Back in 2021, I sat down at my desk to write songs,” Grace said in a statement. “Not knowing what to write specifically for that day, I challenged myself to write a song similar to what was the current hit in the world at the time. I challenged myself not knowing exactly what this song was, so I had to look it up and as it turned out at the time, the current Number One song in the world was 'Butter' by BTS. Now, for those of you who aren't familiar with the song 'Butter', it's about how the singer is 'smooth like butter'.
“Hmmm…” I thought to myself, she continued. “If it's 'smooth as butter,' what am I?” And the answer to that question is 'Everybody's Fucked Out' — not to be confused with 'Everybody's Fucked Out', mind you.”
Grace then took a moment in her statement to go into full George Carlin mode and differentiate her intention by changing the intention. “[I’m] “Fuck everything Outside' as in zero left to give,” he said. “The song quickly became a staple in my live set.”
He tried to record the song a few times, but none of his versions quite worked out, at least until he tried it with the Mississippi Medicals: Matt Patton of the Drive-By Truckers on bass, Mikey Erg on drums, and Paris Campbell Grace on vocals and percussion. (note: cowbell). They all recorded the tune in December at Patton's studio in Water Valley, Mississippi. The band also recorded an EP, details of which are awaited.
Grace and her crew of magnolia state doctors (isn't that a medical exam?) will hit the road in September, culminating in a couple of shows at Riot Fest where Grace and Catbite will perform a tribute to Operation Ivy. Catbite and Taylor Hollingsworth will open the Medicals tour with only a few exceptions.
