Not many high school reunions have Grammy-winning superstars, but Lauryn Hill performed at her Columbia High School reunion in Maplewood, NJ, earlier in August.
But according to video shared by former classmates, Hill not only showed up, but even took the microphone and delivered an impromptu performance, during which the New Jersey native ran through classic hits from her discography.
He performed hymns such as Lauryn Hill's Bad Education“Ex-Factor” as well as the Fugees' “Ready or Not,” which saw her tweak her lyrics with a salute to her old campus stomping grounds. “CHS takes over/ Buffalo Soldier/ Dreadlock Rasta,” he raps.
“God bless you. I love you so much,” he concluded.
Hill's classmates shared their excitement on social media to see the superstar show up and show them off in such an intimate setting. One of her classmates said she was even “speechless”, while another thought she was “dreaming”.
“People traveled from abroad to love their village. It was just amazing. Still speechless from @mslaurynhill giving us an impromptu show.” one person wrote on Instagram. “This reunion was so good for the soul.”
Another classmate added: “Just waking up from last saturday night….. I was dreaming urrrrr??? Did this really happen???? Mrs. Hill is undoubtedly a godsend.”
Lauryn Hill and the Fugees were set to go on tour this summer, but quietly canceled the trek just before it took off earlier in August. Hill blamed a “narrative” that affected ticket sales, but the UK and European tour shows are going ahead as planned.
“Last year, I suffered an injury that necessitated rescheduling some of my shows. Unfortunately, some media's penchant for sensationalism and clickbait headlines have seemingly created a narrative that has affected ticket sales for the North American leg of the tour,” he wrote in a statement posted on Instagram. “The trust and faith I have in my intentions and my commitment to my art seem to have been overshadowed by this unfortunate portrayal.”
