Students from Pittsburgh's Faison and Westinghouse schools performed during the opening leg of Drake and J. Cole's It's All A Blur tour
For 20 students at Pittsburgh Faison and Pittsburgh Westinghouse in Pennsylvania, a school trip didn't mean a trip to the zoo or a museum. Instead, the crew of elementary and middle school students made a trip to PPG Paints Arena Saturday night to sing with Lil Durk in a performance of “All My Life” during the opening slot on Drake and J. Cole's tour It's All a Blur.
Dr. Kimberly Price, performing arts coordinator for Pittsburgh Public Schools, was the first line of contact to bring this opportunity to life. “I was over the moon,” she said CBS News for her reaction to the email containing Lil Durk's request, adding, “To have a team put together like they did by our communications department with our teachers who gave up half the day on Saturday, people want our kids to they're doing well, and so are our kids.”
Released less than a year ago, “All My Life” appeared on Lil Durk's eighth studio album. Almost cured. The record originally featured J. Cole and won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Melodic Performance earlier this month.
However, during this particular performance, the experience these fifth and sixth graders, as well as some older high school students, gained was a prize in itself.
“He was so kind to the kids. I wish you could see it. He gave the kids high fives, [and] fist bumps. At first, with the photos, he stood to the side so the kids could get the spotlight they deserved,” Price said of the rapper's interactions with the students after the show. Each student also received $100 for their efforts.
“Our kids were so excited, they were crying,” Price added. “It was a moment I will never forget, to see the children doing so well and being treated so well by an artist. nor will they forget it.”
