Lil Nas X told fans over the weekend that he's been sitting on a bunch of unreleased material before previewing an eclectic handful of the untitled tracks on his backlog. “I've been collecting music for years, I hate my relationship with the fear of my songs not doing well and perception,” Lil Nas wrote in a post that included snippets of seven songs ranging from moody acoustic ballads to electro dance bangers.
“I wish I could make music and not give af!. anyway enough venting…what are you top 2 of these quotes??” he asked asking for feedback on which one he should officially consider releasing.
The first offering, the slow grinder “Trust Me,” seemed to be an autobiographical tale of high school life, with Nas rapping, “Cap and gown, I graduated and got out of town/ I went to college where I had no one around/ Grindr is having sex with faceless accounts,” over a spare bass beat.
The gospel-rap “Right There” features Lil Nas belting fun bars over a church choir, while the dancey, AfroBeats-ish “Light Again” is a lively pop tune with the chorus, “F–k up the night/ What a hell of a life.” Things get internal on the meditative, acoustic guitar ballad “Angels,” in which Lil Nas croons, “Father stretch my hands/ The lonely road seems to last longer/ Help me with my plans/ All they seem to be going nowhere / Set me free from the worry and desire for pity / Set me free from all this envy inside of me”.
A widely leaked song, the hard-hitting “Down Souf Hoes,” was also included in the dump, as was the straight-rhyme “Lean on My Body” — performed shirtless while walking down a runway while playing a keyboard — and the propulsive pop-rap “Batty Boy”.
It's the first taste of new music since Lil Nas stirred up his usual nest of controversy with January's single “J Christ” and its button-pushing video.
