There was never a plan B for Lil Tecca, who is about to unleash his own Plan A album next Friday (September 20). Ahead of the LP's arrival, the New York rapper took a hiatus Billboard News to discuss all things surrounding his new project and more.
Plan A serves as Tecca's fourth studio album and features 18 tracks with a one-off feature from Don Toliver and production from Taz Taylor and the Internet Money crew.
“Honestly I got the name Plan A when i was ready to finish Tecmy last album,” he said of the inspiration for the title. “I think it sums up where I was in my life when I was probably 14 and I kind of decided I wanted to rap and really just rap. There would be people in class saying, 'Hey bro, you know you have to have a backup plan and so.' I say, “No, bro. I don't really have a backup plan.”
Tecca added: “We recorded most of it in Miami. I was just in the studio every day with Internet Money, Taz [Taylor] and all of them. There were some songs I had done in New York and in the swing too. I didn't produce a lot of it, but definitely the beat selection is what drives a lot of the production… The whole message is like decide what you want to do and do it.”
The 22-year-old also debunked the strange situation involving the Pennsylvania Army National Guard using his personal photo taken from the cover of his hit “Ransom” as part. recruitment brochure.
“This sh– is real,” he said. “I saw that sh– on Twitter — I'm like, 'What's going on right now?' … They contacted the people who were responsible and said, “Sorry, we used the image by mistake.” He used very long words. It basically said, “We didn't know this was an artist.” My point is that the picture doesn't exist without 'Ransom'.''
“Ransom” arrived in May 2019 as Tecca's hit when he was just 16 years old. It eventually reached the top five of the Billboard Hot 100 when it peaked at No. 4. The track is currently 8x-platinum.
“It was my first time jumping to a beat that wasn't from YouTube,” Lil Tecca revealed. “It was my first time taking edibles to the studio. I had food and a drink from Starbucks.”
Juice WRLD finally got on the official remix and Tecca thought she was surprised to see a master working in the studio with the late rapper.
“That was just one of the craziest moments ever,” he said. “I remember when I first met him he was like, 'Hey bro, this flow is tough.' It was my first time meeting someone I was seeing online who was crazy at the time and gave me an opinion on my music… It really meant a lot, bro.”
Tecca continued, “Everything he was telling me and watching him work. Seeing it. Seeing it up close though — it was crazy… He did the verse. He did it in one take. It kind of fried me because I didn't really know that people did things like that at the time. I was really used to writing st and reading it from my phone.'
