Despite being released from prison with just six hours to spare on September 14th Bulletin board Chart tracking week, Linkin Park's comeback single “The Emptiness Machine” debuts at No. 24 on the Rock & Alternative Airplay chart.
The song — the six-piece's first with new singer Emily Armstrong, who sings alongside Mike Shinoda and new drummer Colin Brittain — bowed with 1.1 million impressions in the week ending Sept. 5, according to Luminate .
This volume comes despite the song's release at 6 p.m. ET on Sept. 5, coinciding with the announcement of Armstrong and Brittain joining the band and an upcoming six-date tour, as well as a live show unveiling the band's latest iteration.
Linkin Park's new era follows the death of frontman Chester Bennington in 2017. Additionally, longtime drummer Rob Bourdon has not rejoined the group.
“The Emptiness Machine” is Linkin Park's 17th Rock & Alternative Airplay entry, dating back to 2009. That number includes five No. 1s, including two straight before “The Emptiness Machine”: “Lost” in 2023 and “Friendly Fire”. earlier this year. “Lost” is from the 20th anniversary reissue of Linkin Park's 2003 album Meteorawhile “Friendly Fire” is in this year's retrospective Paper cutters; Both songs feature Bennington's vocals.
Although Rock & Alternative Airplay is the only airplay-based chart “The Emptiness Machine” has bowed on so far, the song has already swelled both the play-based Alternative Airplay (195 plays) and Mainstream Rock Airplay (150 plays) , debuting imminently on both surveys dated September 21st.
