Four Tet Ellie Goulding “In my dreams”
In a world of sonic conformity, “In My Dreams” is a refreshing breath of unconventional brilliance. Released moments ago via Three Six Zero Recordings, the new single is a distorted dance music dreamscape that is both hypnotic and disturbing.
Goulding’s voice, as delicate as ever, draws us into a dream within a dream. She sings about “just visiting” our dreams, a ghostly figure gliding through the subconscious. Meanwhile, Four Tet’s production adds layers upon layers of grimy intensity.
Four Tet says the new collaboration began when Goulding had an idea for a song and recorded voice notes containing lyrics and melodies. She then sent them to him in text messages and asked if he was interested in producing a song with the vocal parts.
“I found other noises to accompany it and made 'In My Dreams,'” he explained in a press release.[Goulding] “We added some new vocal parts, but ended up keeping the voice memo recordings as the main vocal. I guess the first take is often the most magical. I wanted to do something that was about juxtaposing an aggressive, rough sound with a delicate, intimate sound.”
The influential producer had previously recruited Goulding to feature on “Baby,” a track from the 2020 album Sixteen oceansher tenth studio album. She then remixed Goulding's “Easy Lover” in 2022, earning her a Grammy nomination for Best Remixed Recording.
