Not simply be lucky sometimes? That's what Midland ask in three-part harmony on their new song, “Lucky Some,” which instead heralds the arrival of a new album, Just Blue. The Texan trio teamed up with Chris Stapleton and Brandi Carlile producer Dave Cobb for the album, which will be released on September 20. The track follows the release of another LP single, “Old fashioned feeling.”
“Dave Cobb has been a producer we've wanted to work with since we first heard Sturgill Simpson Postmodern sounds in country musicsinger and guitarist Mark Wystrach said in a statement. “Dave's eclectic musical background and the way he approaches recording as an experience rather than a task made him the perfect match for us. On Just Bluewe feel like Dave helped us find the sound we've been looking for for a long time.”
“'Lucky Sometimes' is a get-up-and-go anthem, it's a lot, when you feel like you can't lose,” Wystrach continued. “The arrangement is sparse with a high and lonely groove that culminates with soaring harmonies on the hook. It's the first song on the album and an introduction to the new soundscape Midland found with Dave Cobb at the helm.”
Bassist and singer Cameron Duddy added: “When we were writing these songs, it was a journey through all the things in country music that we love. You don't hear a lot of that kind of unfiltered, gritty stuff that goes along with the great guitar sounds, deep harmonies, and mixes you can get into. But that's the essence of what Midland is — and Dave Cobb has brought a new height to our sound.”
A day before the record's release, Midland will try their luck with the first date of a several-month Get Lucky tour in Cincinnati. The band will also be on the road before the album's release, with a string of dates throughout the summer, starting at the Old Saloon in Emigrant, Montana on June 27.
