CuzzosX5: “Pop Out”
Two specific moments turned me into the leader of the LA rap group Cuzzosx5. First up was their hilarious single “Gucci Maine“—in the tradition of YN Jay and Louie Ray”Coochie“—and the way they skewer dudes in their DMs: 'Niggas/How the hell did you get cut and now you're out with the bros?' Then it was the first few seconds of their video for “Young Wings“, where two members, Teawhyy and Milly Mo (the other three are BB, Jasscole and Big INDO), argue over whether DayDay or Langston is the hottest guy in the Rangers, one of the central jerkin ' crews in the late 2000s and early 2010s. It's not only a pretty funny scene, but also their music as LA shit all the time.
Their latest song “Pop Out” keeps the train rolling as four of the five (minus Teawhyy) pump their fists and boast a mellow West Coast beat that would fit on a BlueBucksClan tape. My favorite lyrics are Milly Mo, she has jokes for days, and Jasscole, because she has the gravitas of a rap star. Still not their best song (my pick is “I H8 Home”), but it's a solid introduction to the next sensational rap crew.
With artists releasing songs fast and furious, it's hard for the average hip-hop head to keep track of them all — no matter how well-rounded they are. That's why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
