More and more celebrities are speaking out amid devastating violence, genocide and famine in Palestine, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Lizzo took to Instagram on Monday (May 13) to join the conversation.
“I want to take a second and personally thank all the activists who work tirelessly to help the liberation and freedom of people who have been genocided around the world, especially in Palestine, Sudan and the Congo. ,” he shared in an Instagram video, speaking directly into the camera. “As someone who has worked closely with activists, I know the impact it can have on you mentally and physically and it can feel ungrateful, so if you haven't heard that today, thank you. Your work is not in vain. You've helped so many people, literally saved lives, and personally energized me.”
The “Special” singer added that she was “in a deep, dark depression” and “had some mental health crises and episodes” over the last year, which left her in “an emotional state where I couldn't process or handle anything. It was very dark.”
He continued, “I'm not saying this to make excuses, nor do I want sympathy. I just haven't been able to be transparent with you for a long time. This has weighed on my heart to share with you. The people in my life who love and care about me helped me out of this dark place. I appreciate them, the kind words from people online have really motivated me, but also the activism I see has been extremely encouraging. You all have really motivated me to get my sanity back and get back to who I am.''
Lizzo concluded her message by calling out the students who tirelessly protest on college campuses, as well as organizations such as Operation Olive Branch, which work to connect people directly with struggling Palestinian families. “I have reached out to activists seeing how I can help and stay tuned for more information on how you can help these ongoing genocides in the world because we are not free 'til we are all free,” she shared.
