Lil Wayne missing Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show for Kendrick Lamar has become a lightning rod for conversation in hip-hop circles. Wayne himself admitted he was “hurt” by the NFL's decision not to let him perform in his hometown, and others including Nicki Minaj, Master P, Cam'ron and more continued to stand by the rap deity of New Orleans.
LL Cool J sat down with Fat Joe for an episode of Fat Joe speaks on Friday (Oct. 18), and among the many topics discussed was Weezy snubbing K. Dot's Super Bowl headline spot.
The “Loungin” rapper gave Wayne his flowers, but it's cool that Kendrick is having his moment right now with the numbers he's put up this year. LL thinks Wayne will get his shot too.
“[Lil Wayne’s] one of our great artists, he is an incredible writer. He’s going to have his day — let Kendrick have it,” he said. “Here's the thing: your time will come [and] you will have your day… You will have your time. You can't let it break you. The only reason he makes me laugh is because I know how blessed he is, how successful he is. So he doesn't have to worry about that moment. It's only a moment, brother. It is only a moment.”
LL Cool J mentioned how he wasn't voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for years on the docket before it broke in 2021. With all the success he and other artists of his ilk have enjoyed, he referred to these kinds of roadblocks as “champagne problems.” .
“These are champagne problems. There are guys who can't listen to their demo. I think we are a little bit, unwittingly, spoiled,” he admitted. “Wayne is crème de la crème.”
Kendrick was announced by the NFL and Roc Nation as the headliner for Super Bowl LIX in September, and a devastated Wayne took a few days to gather himself before speaking.
“That hurt. It hurt a lot. You know what I'm talking about. It hurt a lot,” he said in a video he posted on Instagram. “I blame myself for not being mentally prepared for a disappointment. … But I thought it was nothing better than that spot and that stage and that platform in my hometown, so I hurt.”
