The 27-year-old chart-topping singer from New Zealand was the target of Charli’s recent track Girl, So Confusing, which was inspired by the British star’s jealousy over the other’s chart success.
The song sparked furious discussion among the two singers’ fanbases, but they put the dispute behind them by releasing a remix of the track, to which Lorde supplied lyrics and vocals.
Reflecting on the success of the critically praised remix, Lorde told Billboard, “(The song was a) two-part thing of both deep empathy for my friend and this feeling of ‘Man, I’ve been misunderstood, and I really want to make it right.’
“When I was writing this verse, I was saying these things to her for the first time. There was such a rawness and an immediacy to what I was saying. I love that we truly did work it out on the remix. There’s something very brat about that, something very meta and modern. Only Charli could make that happen.”
She added, “She had opened up a channel between us, and it made me say things that I had never said. I was articulating things I’d never said or maybe even things I’ve never even heard said. This whole thing has been such a huge honour.”
Charli, 31, reportedly penned the original version of the track to exorcise jealous feelings she had over Lorde’s success with her 2013 global hit Royals.
Charli’s latest album, titled Brat was released this month and has thus far reached number 2 in the UK album charts, number 3 in the USA, and number 4 in New Zealand.
