Lorde is doing her best to put to rest rumors of a possible beef between her and Charli XCX. Lorde's residency in New Zealand allowed her to sneak a peek at Charlie's new album, which is officially out in the States tomorrow — and she's clearly a fan. On Thursday, Lorde shared a message of support for her co-star on Instagram, confirming there were no hard feelings between the pair as rumors continue to circulate that one of the songs on Brat focuses on her.
Fans have speculated that the unreleased track “Girl, So Confusing” is about Charil's complicated feelings for Lorde. The song's lyrics detail an ever-changing relationship with another unknown singer, whom he both admires and envies. While Charli has not blamed Lorde as the inspiration behind the track, the singer has discussed the constant comparison of the two by the public in the past. “People say we look alike/ They say we have the same hair,” she sings on the song.
“The only album I've ever saved is out today… Charli just cooked this up differently… So much love, grace and skin in the game. I speak for all of us when I say that it is an honor to be moved, changed and silenced by her work. There is NO ONE like this bitch,” Lorde wrote on her Instagram Story without directly referring to “Girl, So Confusing.”
On Wednesday, Charli neither confirmed nor denied whether “Girl, So Confusing” was written for the “Royals” singer. “I haven't exactly decided whether to reveal. When I wrote it, I was like, 'revealing!'” she said during an appearance on the La Culturistas podcast. “But now, you know, the time is here. I'm like, “Mmmmmmm.” Do you think I should reveal?… People will guess. You probably have an accurate guess, and I won't say it out loud because you're going to say it from my face, but it's probably going to be that person.”
While speaking to Rolling Stone UK earlier this summer, Charli admitted that even she often compares herself to Lorde.
“When 'Royals' came out, I was very jealous of the success of that song and Ella. You put all these things together in your brain, like, “He was into my music. He had long hair. I had long hair. She was wearing black lipstick. I used to wear black lipstick.' You draw these parallels and think, “Well, that could have been me.” But it couldn't happen because we are completely different people. I wasn't making music that sounded like 'Royals'. I think you just read whatever you want because you feel insecure about your job.”
While fans are left to read between the lines as to the track's inspiration, Charli explained the overall message behind the song in La Culturistas. “I feel like working in entertainment, there's this kind of dance that we all do with each other. Whether you're in the music, or you're in your world, no matter how you identify, there's this dance. Everyone is watching each other. They're all posing for the picture, like, “Hey, oh my god, nice to see you!” But then you say, “I want what they have.” And then the next day, you're like, “That sucks!” It's happening, but nobody's really willing to talk about it.”
