Belfast musician and singer-songwriter Lucy Gaffney reveals details of her upcoming EP, titled Traps, is set to be released on May 3 via Nettwerk. The EP, produced by Duncan Mills (known for his work with artists such as Bleach Lab, Jake Bugg and Geowulf) along with Gaffney's brother Thom Southern, delves into the complex interplay between endings and new beginnings. Each track on the EP reflects this dynamic, similar to the dawn emerging after the darkness of night. Themes of love, loss and hope permeate the songs, with lyrics that explore how memories of the past linger in our subconscious, surfacing in our dreams. Gaffney's narrative also touches on the importance of reflecting on and embracing time, revealing the beauty found in both the shadows and the light of our past, present, and future.
The atmospheric song “Forgive to Forget” is full of longing beauty as Gaffney shares “It's been about a year that I've been in Dublin. It's about a new romance and the conflicted nature of my thoughts at the time, thoughts that only seem to happen when you're lost in the idea of love. I was searching for clarity and trying hard to break down the walls I built in my mind to figure out how I really felt about someone. Later, I started reading 'A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man' by James Joyce, and only then with reflection, was I able to realize that it was the exaggerated mind that was guarding the reality of the situation and how I really felt.”
